
Dave Chasen created a chili recipe in 1936 and opened a small barbecue shack at Doheny Drive and Beverly Boulevard. The chili cost 25 cents a bowl, and the business expanded into a well-known Hollywood restaurant. Chasen’s attracted major celebrities such as Clark Gable, Alfred Hitchcock, and Greta Garbo. Humphrey Bogart and Mayo Methot, known for alcohol-fueled fights, were repeatedly banned or kicked out of places including Chasen’s. After their divorce, a 1952 report described Chasen throwing Bogie out of the restaurant occasionally. The restaurant featured deep banquettes, white glove service, and a private-club atmosphere with required reservations and a dress code. Chasen’s also created the Shirley Temple mocktail for the underage star.
