Foundering becomes available on AMC+ ahead of its 9 p.m. ET broadcast. The satire centers on Silicon Valley cynicism and hostility toward tech-bro culture, while still acknowledging the humanity of its characters. Early moments of the penultimate episode create a contrast with the series’ usual nastiness by presenting Tom Ruffage as a public servant trying to untangle bureaucratic problems at the VA. The episode highlights his attempt to replace MUMPS, an outdated filing system, and shows a brief sense of camaraderie between VA engineers and Hypergnosis newcomers. Although the process appears unusually smooth despite the technological gap, Tom’s vision seems capable of helping people before it derails in a higher-stakes, funnier way.
"And while we're invited once again to laugh at MUMPS - the ancient, pre-moon-landing filing system Tom is trying to replace - there appears to be some genuine esprit de corps between the VA's retirement-age engineers and the energetic whippersnappers at Hypergnosis, who seem happy to be doing something other than clapping at Duncan's motivational speeches. Though it seems odd that the process goes as smoothly as it does, given the technological gulf between an old government system and a hot new data company, there's at least a sense that Tom's vision may actually help people."
