Santa Clara Co. uses AI sensors to help detect fires early before major destruction
Briefly

Santa Clara County is embracing artificial intelligence by deploying 50 AI fire detection sensors in remote areas to enhance wildfire prevention efforts. As fire seasons become year-round due to climate conditions, early detection is paramount. County leaders, including Supervisor Otto Lee, emphasize that using technology like AI can significantly benefit wildfire management. The sensors operate by sampling air for smoke, alerting authorities when unusual patterns are detected, thus enabling timely intervention before blazes grow uncontrollable. The initiative aims to strengthen existing wildfire prevention strategies and safeguard the community's open spaces.
"As we know, to avoid large wildfires, the most important thing is really to try to catch them when they start early," said Santa Clara Co. Supervisor Otto Lee.
"Even though we're no stranger throughout California to large, destructive wildfires, there's something I see that's resonating with Palisades and Eaton and the L.A. fires that seem to, at least for now, have everybody focused on how can we get early detection," Schalet said.
"It might be not enough smoke where the cameras are picking it up, because we also have AI enabled cam..." said Santa Clara County Deputy Fire Chief Brian Glass.
