PG&E proposes power equipment upgrade to serve Microsoft data hub

PG&E has proposed significant electricity upgrades in San Jose aimed at supporting Microsoft's planned 90-megawatt data center. Microsoft purchased a 65-acre site for this purpose and has requested transmission-level service. Upgrades include the installation of a 115-kilovolt transmission line and enhancements at the Los Esteros Substation. The data center is expected to operate year-round, commencing operations in January 2027. Microsoft will contribute to some of the costs involved with the power upgrades, specifically for dedicated backup services.
PG&E filed a proposal with state regulators seeking approval to build electricity upgrades in San Jose to serve Microsoft's future 90-megawatt data center project.
Microsoft requested PG&E provide transmission-level service for the planned data center, with operations expected 24 hours a day, launched in January 2027.
PG&E aims to install 115-kilovolt transmission upgrades at its Los Esteros Substation, as well as a new transmission line to serve the data center.
Microsoft will cover some costs for the upgrades, including a new transmission line and facilities for dedicated backup service.
