San Jose State University (SJSU) has recently achieved an R2 research university designation, showcasing significant research expenditures of $83.4 million. This recognition is hampered by the Donahoe Higher Education Act, which limits its ability to award sufficient Ph.D.s for R1 status. The article proposes that SJSU should join the University of California system to overcome these limitations and better serve Silicon Valley's innovation ecosystem. This inclusion could attract talented individuals and enterprises, stimulate the local economy, and improve educational quality and research through access to UC's resources.
Inclusion in the UC system allows SJSU to offer more doctorate degrees, elevating its status and aligning with Silicon Valley's innovation needs, ultimately boosting the economy.
The current Donahoe Higher Education Act restricts SJSU from achieving R1 status; however, joining the UC system could facilitate its recognition and funding.
