OpenAI has a new web browser ready for launch
"We think that AI represents a rare once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about and how to use one and how to most productively and pleasantly use the web,"
"Tabs are great but we haven't seen a whole lot of innovation since then,"
"Any browsing done in incognito mode isn't linked to your ChatGPT account and isn't saved in your browser history, OpenAi said."
Atlas is based on Chromium and integrates ChatGPT into web browsing via an "Ask ChatGPT" sidebar and an optional agent mode that can act autonomously. The agent mode offers visible controls including a "take control" option and a red "stop" button while performing tasks. Atlas will be available worldwide for Mac users with agent mode limited to paid Plus and Pro subscribers, with plans to expand to Windows and mobile. Users can choose to log in or browse in incognito; incognito activity is not linked to ChatGPT accounts or saved in browser history. Atlas also supports cookies, passwords, and an optional memories feature. The launch occurs amid expectations of rising bot traffic and renewed attention to browser innovation and privacy and security concerns.
