Where to watch the 2026 total solar eclipse
"The solar eclipse will take place on Wednesday 12th August 2026, and if seen from the UK, it will obscure about 90% of the sun. Which is equivalent to a very cloudy sky, assuming there isn't cloud in the sky already. The eclipse for the UK will start around 6:15pm, reach maximum coverage about 7:13pm, and finish at around 8pm."
"Conveniently, the solar eclipse will pass over a large swathe of northern Spain and will be in totality - that is, the moon completely obscuring the solar disc. Not quite convenient enough that it would pass over a major city with an airport in it, but close enough to fly out (or train through France) and catch a train to a city within the line of totality."
On Wednesday 12th August 2026 a total solar eclipse will occur. From the UK about 90% of the sun will be obscured, producing light like a cloudy sky. The UK eclipse will begin around 6:15pm, peak near 7:13pm, and end about 8:00pm, with sunset around 8:30pm. The path of totality crosses northern Spain where the Moon fully covers the solar disc. Spain's trains can reach cities and towns in the path; being within roughly 30 miles of the centre line and choosing clear skies and a good viewing site is more important than a few extra seconds of totality. Slower regional trains may serve closer towns but services can be limited.
