Was our moon made by Earth colliding with its neighbor? DW 11/20/2025
"New research published in the journal Science suggests this protoplanet was actually a close neighbor of the early Earth, and formed somewhere between our homeworld and the sun. "The findings from a study led by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) come from a detailed analysis of the elemental makeup of the Earth, our moon, and nearby meteorites. It found that the elemental isotopes are practically indistinguishable between the Earth and the moon. Isotopes are chemical element "species" that have the same number of protons in their nucleus, but vary in the number"
About 4.5 billion years ago Earth was struck by a Mars-sized protoplanet named Theia. The impact shattered Theia and contributed fragments that fused with early Earth. New isotopic analysis finds Earth and the Moon have practically indistinguishable elemental isotopes. The isotopic similarity implies Theia closely matched Earth's composition and likely formed between Earth and the Sun as a near neighbor. The findings derive from detailed comparisons of elemental makeup of Earth, the Moon, and nearby meteorites. Isotopes vary by neutron number and reveal chemical origins; hydrogen isotopes like deuterium and tritium illustrate these variations.
