The article reflects on the journey of the 13.7: Cosmos and Culture blog at NPR, conceived by physicist Marcelo Gleiser and another writer over eight years ago. Their vision was to create a space where scientists could discuss critical issues regarding science's role in culture, religion, and human identity. The blog encouraged deep conversations about knowledge, nature, and science denialism, allowing writers to engage readers in thoughtful discourse. After seven fruitful years, the project is concluding, leaving the authors grateful for the platform and the dialogue it fostered.
We imagined a forum where practicing scientists could address the deepest and most potent issues facing humanity, discussing how science informs questions of religion and culture.
We wanted to show people how science worked as a force in all our lives, moving beyond scientific triumphalism to understand its power for both good and bad.
NPR took quite a risk in creating this blog, allowing us to explore topics rarely covered, such as the foundations of knowledge and the forces driving science denialism.
While seven years is a long time, I feel most gratitude for NPR’s unique opportunity to engage readers in unpacking complex scientific questions.
