Royal Observatory Greenwich is undertaking a £7.7m First Light project to improve access and create educational and event spaces. A lift tower will connect the Great Equatorial Telescope, currently reachable only via a small spiral staircase. Four interactive galleries, a covered courtyard named Astronomers Court for live science events, and a roof terrace for live-streaming celestial events will be added. Work began last month and is due for completion by spring 2028, during which the Peter Harrison Planetarium will be closed. A new entrance pavilion will better direct visitors from Greenwich Park into the UNESCO World Heritage site. Funding includes £9.7m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, museum reserves, government funding, and external grants.
