"A rare form of diabetes affecting newborn babies and caused by a genetic disorder has been discovered by scientists in the UK and Belgium. Researchers at the University of Exeter, alongside scientists in Belgium's Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), found that a newly identified genetic disorder is causing diabetes in newborn babies by disrupting the cells which make insulin. Through DNA sequencing and stem cell research, the scientists discovered how mutations in a certain gene, TMEM167A, can lead insulin-producing cells to fail early in life."
The Independent requests donations to fund on-the-ground reporting across reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech while maintaining free access to journalism without paywalls. Funding supports investigations, documentaries, and sending journalists to report both sides of stories for a broad American audience. Separately, scientists at the University of Exeter and Universite Libre de Bruxelles discovered a newly identified genetic disorder that causes diabetes in newborns by disrupting insulin-producing cells. DNA sequencing and stem cell research revealed that mutations in the TMEM167A gene impair insulin secretion, explaining diabetes onset in affected infants and clarifying the gene's role in insulin production.
