"rotating in an unexpected manner when it emerged from behind Mars,"
"Signal is weak on our 20-meter dish Sternwarte Bochum, but MAVEN is currently in command lock with [Deep Space Network] in Madrid."
NASA lost signal from the MAVEN spacecraft and has not received any transmissions since December 4. MAVEN appeared to be rotating in an unexpected manner after emerging from behind Mars, complicating recovery efforts. The mission team is analyzing tracking data to determine scenarios that led to the loss and continues attempts to reestablish contact. Amateur radio operator group AMSAT detected a weak low-gain antenna signal and reported MAVEN in command lock with the Deep Space Network in Madrid. NASA is mitigating impacts on Perseverance and Curiosity operations and will rely on other orbiters—MRO, Mars Odyssey, and ESA's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter—to support surface communications.
