In a major new report, scientists build rationale for sending astronauts to Mars
""We're searching for life on Mars,""
""The answer to the question 'are we alone ' is always going to be 'maybe,' unless it becomes yes.""
""Everyone is inspired by this because it's becoming real. We can get there. Decades ago, we didn't have the technologies. This would have been a study report.""
A committee of US scientists and engineers designates the search for present or past life on Mars as the highest-priority scientific objective for initial human missions. The committee was co-chaired by Dava Newman and Linda T. Elkins-Tanton and identified 11 top science objectives to pursue alongside crewed exploration. The effort took two years and produced comprehensive recommendations to ensure meaningful science during human operations. Confirmation of Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator and advances by SpaceX and Blue Origin in reusable in-space transportation increase momentum and reduce barriers to crewed Mars missions within the next two decades.
