"I eventually found a vision training program designed to improve focus. NASA doctors told me they thought it wouldn't work, but they didn't see any harm in trying it. So I did. The exercises involved relaxing my eyes and learning to "focus beyond" an object so it would come into view, rather than forcing my eyes to strain. I also used undercorrected lenses, so my eyes had to work harder. It was enough to improve my vision by a couple of lines to pass the eye exam and requalify."
NASA rejected a candidate from its astronaut program three times, with medical disqualification based on vision standards. Vision issues were the most common disqualification reason at the interview stage. After the final rejection, the candidate searched for a way to improve vision, considering conflicting advice about dehydration or hydration before testing. A vision training program was found that aimed to improve focus by relaxing the eyes and learning to focus beyond an object so it came into view without straining. Under-corrected lenses were also used to make the eyes work harder. The approach improved vision by a couple of lines, enabling the candidate to pass the eye exam and requalify.
