"We need to rethink what's possible for a eukaryotic cell in a significant way."
"It's the most uninteresting geothermal feature you'll find in Lassen."
An amoeba named Incendiamoeba cascadensis was found in a pH-neutral hot stream at Lassen Volcanic National Park. The organism grew when cultured with nutrients, divided at 63 °C, remained motile at 64 °C, and produced dormant cysts capable of reactivating after exposure to 70 °C. The observed thermal tolerance surpasses previous records for eukaryotic life and challenges assumptions that nucleated cells cannot tolerate extreme high temperatures typical of some bacteria and archaea. The amoeba was not initially visible in raw water samples but emerged after incubation under nutrient-rich conditions.
