DNA recovered from some soldiers' remains detected Salmonella enterica (paratyphoid fever) and Borrelia recurrentis (louse-transmitted relapsing fever). Contemporary accounts list diarrhea, dysentery, fevers, pneumonia, jaundice, and typhus among the illnesses. Previous analyses identified body lice DNA in remains, supporting louse-borne transmission. Historical pathogen genomes can illuminate disease evolution, spread, and the social or environmental factors that enabled outbreaks.
