"This image combines Hubble observations made at infrared, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths, showing the hot blue stars carving out a space inside the surrounding nebula of gas and dust."
NGC 346 is a young star cluster located about 200,000 light-years away in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Hot, blue stars within the cluster generate strong stellar winds that carve out cavities in the surrounding nebula of gas and dust. Hubble observations in infrared, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths were combined to reveal the structure and interplay between stars and nebular material. The multiwavelength view emphasizes the influence of massive stars on their environments and the sculpting effects of radiation and winds on nearby dust and gas. The image is presented as Day 8 of the 2025 Space Telescope Advent Calendar.
