"The effects were not huge, but they're consistent,"
"Statistically, we really see an increase in their willingness to pay."
"There are people who have profound problems with social behaviour, because they can't take other people's perspective into account and are constantly behaving selfishly,"
"but if you go to the gym twice weekly for a period of two months, your body changes. This is the same."
Scientists applied electrical stimulation to frontal and parietal brain areas of 44 volunteers while they decided how to split money with an anonymous partner. Simultaneous stimulation of both regions produced a measurable increase in how much participants gave away, with effects described as small but consistent. The behavioural change was short-lived after a single session. Repeated stimulation sessions are proposed to be necessary for longer-term change, and the approach could potentially help people with severe social-behaviour impairments who struggle to take others' perspectives.
