ArXiv says submissions must be in English: are AI translators up for the job?

Now researchers uploading their work to the site are facing a new requirement: from 11 February, all submissions must be either written in English or accompanied by a full English translation. arXiv receives over 20,000 manuscripts each month and hosts nearly 3 million preprints across eight subject areas, mainly computer science, physics and mathematics. Starting 11 February, all submissions must be written in English or accompanied by a full English translation; previously only an English abstract was required. Staff say the rule will ease moderation and maintain a broad readership, and a volunteer team of about 300 moderators checks submissions for appropriateness. About 1% of submissions are non-English. Critics warn the mandate may discourage uploads of theses and textbook chapters and push some authors to multilingual servers like HAL.
