A Rare Eclipse Streak Starts in 2026 Including the 'Eclipse of the Century'-and These Destinations Will Have the Best Views
"There's never been a better time to be an eclipse chaser. The new year marks the beginning of a spectacular streak for the astronomical phenomenon, which will be longer-lasting and better positioned than ever before. Sky-watchers will be treated to annual total solar eclipses in 2026, 2027, and 2028, one of which is being dubbed "the eclipse of the century" for its transcendent qualities."
"According to Space.com, the last time Earth experienced such a concentration in total solar eclipses was in 2008 to 2010, making the upcoming streak the most exciting stretch in over 15 years. Not only that, but the ever-important paths of totality will include travel hotspots, making these some of the most accessible and enchanting eclipses of our lifetime. Aug. 12, 2026 is the first major date to have on your calendar."
A sequence of annual total solar eclipses will occur in 2026, 2027, and 2028, offering unusually long durations and accessible viewing locations. Aug. 12, 2026 will produce a path of totality across Siberia, eastern Greenland, western Iceland, northern Spain, and parts of the eastern Mediterranean, marking the first total eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999. Cruise lines plan voyages to ocean-viewing points and Iceland will experience just over two minutes of totality. On Aug. 2, 2027 a six-minute total eclipse will cross the Middle East, North Africa, and southern Spain, the longest land-visible totality since 1991 and until 2114. Clear skies over Libya and Egypt increase viewing prospects.
