Dangerous Animals embraces its role within the sharksploitation genre, portraying sharks sympathetically while critiquing human obsession with their destructive power. The film follows Bruce Tucker, played by Jai Courtney, who hosts a diving experience on Australia’s coast. Tucker, while charming, reveals his sinister side by murdering a tourist and using sharks to fulfill a twisted fantasy. Courtney's performance, alongside strong direction, captures the chilling contrast of Tucker's character, ultimately revealing how his obsession with death becomes a show of horrific spectacle, with sharks forced into a role they never sought.
Courtney is clearly having a ball as Tucker... His performance offers us a window into a disturbed mind and the ritual he feels compelled to complete.
Tucker is properly charming, if a little rough around the edges, but one could easily chalk that up to the shark attack he survived as a child.
