Marc-Edouard Vlasic placed on waivers by Sharks for purpose of contract buyout
Briefly

The San Jose Sharks announced the unconditional waiving of longtime defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic for a contract buyout, marking the end of his 19-season career with the team. The decision, described as difficult by general manager Mike Grier, comes after Vlasic played 1,323 games for the Sharks, cementing his legacy as one of the franchise’s all-time greats. He earned acclaim for his defensive skills throughout his almost two-decade career, notably contributing significantly in challenging assignments against top opposing players. The buyout will save the team just over $2 million against the salary cap for the upcoming season.
NHL teams had until Monday at 2 p.m. (PDT) to buy out players' contracts.
Over the course of his career in the NHL, Vlasic was one of the premier shutdown defensemen, earning tough defensive assignments on the ice against the best players in the world and doing it with effectiveness.
This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years.
He will go down not only as one of the best defensemen in franchise history, but one of the best players.
