Four California sea lions were released into the ocean by SeaWorld San Diego, marking a small victory amid a significant toxic algae bloom affecting marine life from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. This bloom has caused sickness and death among various species, including sea turtles, dolphins, and birds. Jeni Smith, SeaWorld's rescue curator, reported concerning levels of domoic acid found in many dolphins. The situation has strained local marine biology resources, as facilities have been overwhelmed with deceased animals requiring necropsies to uncover the causes of their deaths.
We had a pep talk, she said, and I said, 'Don't eat those toxic fish, OK? Get the good fish.' This marks a small victory against toxic algae.
It is kind of the first time I've seen in San Diego County where there are just bodies of animals everywhere. We were getting calls often.
