San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier initially resisted trading defenseman Jake Walman, who was crucial for their defense. However, an enticing trade offer from Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman ultimately changed his mind. Walman has significantly contributed to the Oilers in the playoffs, with substantial ice time and impressive statistics. The Oilers aimed to bolster their offensive capabilities alongside stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl by acquiring Walman, whose performance and contract made him an appealing target for Edmonton.
Our identity is just being a good puck-moving team. If you don't have the defensemen who can make those good plays and pass the puck up to the forwards, you're not a puck-moving team.
(Walman) was a big target from the middle of the season. Mike Grier was probably tired of talking to me. I was told he wasn't trading him because he had another year on his contract.
We just thought it was a price that we couldn't turn down. I know (Bowman) well... and when he brought (up a first-rounder) a day or so ago, we had to really think about it.
