During a recent game against the Phillies, umpire Phil Cuzzi confronted Giants' Jordan Hicks and Jung Hoo Lee, leading to tension on the field. After the seventh inning, Cuzzi shouted at Hicks over his exchanges with the Phillies' dugout. Despite attempts by manager Bob Melvin to calm the situation, Hicks walked away. Afterward, Cuzzi grilled Lee regarding a helmet adjustment, misinterpreting it as a public dissent against a pitch call. After the game, he spoke to Lee and an interpreter for clarification, amid misunderstandings stemming from a previously tested challenge signaling tactic during spring training.
I wasn't talking to him at all, so I didn't want him in my face, so I just kind of walked away and defused the situation.
The umpire thought I was requesting a challenge on the pitch because I do adjust my helmet every pitch.
