'This was Willie's dream': Hundreds of SF Giants legend's items up in auction
""This was Willie's dream, to have this opportunity to showcase the things he'd accumulated, let his fans have them and have all the money go to kids," Bleich said."
""It's extremely uncommon," Hunt said. "It's not unprecedented, but it's not common, especially not for a player on this level and with this volume quality.""
Willie Mays's personal memorabilia collection is on display at 128 King St., next to Underdogs Cantina, for one week ahead of an auction. Hundreds of items will be sold this weekend, with every penny of proceeds designated for the Say Hey! Foundation. Mays died in June 2024 and wrote his will over 20 years ago directing the items to benefit the foundation. Jeff Bleich, longtime friend and attorney, is trustee of the estate and a foundation board member. Hunt Auctions is handling the sale and called the full-charity arrangement extremely uncommon, noting past high-profile athlete auctions and a 2022 Russell sale that netted $7.4 million.
