The $17M the SF Giants still owe Dodgers ace could wreck offseason
"As former San Francisco Giants starter Blake Snell gets ready to start Game 1 of the World Series for the archrival Dodgers, one key figure around the Giants is saying the left-hander will have a serious impact on how much San Francisco can spend this offseason. Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming was a guest on the " TK Show" podcast from San Francisco Standard columnist Tim Kawakami."
"According to Baseball Prospectus, the Giants' 2025 payroll was $218 million, well below the first "competitive balance tax," or CBT, line for MLB teams at $241 million. Heading into 2026, the Giants already have $184 million committed for tax accounting purposes, with the vast majority coming to their top six superstars: pitchers Logan Webb and Robbie Ray and hitters Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Jung Hoo Lee."
""I think one thing that is a little factor here that's painful to even say out loud, if you go back and remember how the deal was structured, Blake Snell's second half of his bonus, or whatever that was, comes this year," Fleming said."
Blake Snell will start Game 1 of the World Series for the Dodgers, and his remaining payment could affect San Francisco's offseason spending. The Giants hired Tony Vitello as manager after his college tenure. The Giants' 2025 payroll was $218 million, below the first competitive balance tax (CBT) line of $241 million. Heading into 2026 the Giants have $184 million committed, concentrated in Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Jung Hoo Lee, leaving about $60 million before a $244 million CBT threshold. That gap could push the team to add an outfielder or pursue a high-salary trade, but Snell's second-half bonus comes this year. Snell signed a two-year, $62 million contract with an opt-out and pitched for the Giants in 2024. Former president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi tried to keep the cash flow to Snell.
