"Dominican outlet Conexión 23 reported 24-year-old Antonio Jiménez was injured in a catastrophic crash on Monday morning in San Pedro de Macorís, a small city about an hour east of Santo Domingo that's known for producing professional baseball players. According to the report, the collision between an SUV and two scooters left three men dead; Jiménez was reportedly the only survivor. But the pitcher was rushed to a nearby medical center with what the report described as fractures to his spine and femur, as well as lacerations, and was placed in intensive care."
"Jiménez was pitching in Liga Dominicana, a winter league in the country, for the Toros del Este, a team based in the farther east town of La Romana. In a statement posted on X, the Toros said Jiménez suffered several injuries in the crash and they sent their condolences to those who died in it. Through team spokesperson Shana Daum, the Giants also sent SFGATE a statement when asked about the news: "We are aware of the tragic car accident involving one of our players, Antonio Jimenez, and are in the process of gathering more information. Out of respect for everyone affected and due to the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from further comment.""
"Jiménez originally signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018 but joined the Giants organization as a minor league free agent last offseason. Jiménez spent the entire season with Triple-A Sacramento, tallying a 3.55 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. Former Giants pitching coach J.P. Martinez sounded like a big fan of Jiménez, according to a San Francisco Chronicle story from spring training. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)"
