'My favorite person I've ever played for': SF Giants' Gilbert praises new manager Vitello
""It's hard to describe. I feel like I was kind of shaking at the moment,""
""But then, you just kind of want to get to work. That's what I learned playing under him at Tennessee - he just makes you want to work all the time.""
""It's obviously a unique ordeal coming from college to the big leagues, but this is my favorite person I've ever played for,""
""It's not even close. There's nobody else I'd want to play alongside of, and obviously, I have to earn that opportunity, no doubt. But I'm looking forward to being around him and competing with him.""
Drew Gilbert learned during a flight that Tony Vitello, his University of Tennessee head coach, would become the San Francisco Giants' new manager and felt shaken but motivated. Gilbert said Vitello makes players want to work and that he looks forward to competing under him. Vitello will be introduced at Oracle Park and will make an unprecedented jump from college to the major leagues. Vitello never played professionally, coached at Missouri, TCU and Arkansas, and transformed Tennessee into a national power. President of baseball operations Buster Posey made a bold hire aimed at revitalizing a struggling franchise. Vitello reportedly signed a three-year, $3.5 million deal with an option.
