NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman admitted it was a mistake to allow a game to continue after Angel City defender Savy King collapsed during play. King suffered a heart abnormality and is recovering after surgery. Berman emphasized the league's commitment to learning from this incident to ensure such a situation does not recur. Despite some inquiries on the decision-making during the game, she focused on player safety and care. Additionally, an ongoing investigation involving Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya regarding accusations of a toxic environment remains unaddressed.
As we regrouped internally we of course came to the conclusion that the game should not have continued... That's what we're committed to do going forward.
In a similar situation, the NFL suspended a game after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the field.
As we reviewed the situation, I don't think it's constructive to recount who did what and when... our focus was really on making sure that the player was cared for.
Berman would not answer specific questions about how the decision was made to finish the Angel City-Utah game.
