What feels safer, BART or bus? Explore a new trove of Bay Area transit survey data
"The Snapshot Survey, a year-long, one-time-only project by the MTC surveyed 160,000 transit users between Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 to find out about ridership in the aftermath of the pandemic. All regional surveys, including the onboard Transit Passenger Survey, which takes a five to six- years to complete, were canceled by the MTC during the pandemic. The MTC is currently in the third year of its next Transit Passenger Survey cycle, which should be completed by the end of the decade,"
"The dashboard shows that about 60% of all AC Transit bus riders are low-income, making less than $50,000 a year, while only a third of BART riders are low-income, and only 8% of ferry riders. The income disparities can be seen in other parts of the data. For example, only 26% of people who take AC Transit buses during the weekday have access to a vehicle, while 53% of BART riders and 77% of ferry riders do."
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission published a visual dashboard presenting results from a Snapshot Survey of 160,000 transit users. The survey shows sharp income disparities across modes: about 60% of AC Transit bus riders earn under $50,000, versus roughly one-third of BART riders and 8% of ferry riders. Vehicle access varies: 26% of AC Transit weekday riders have vehicle access, versus 53% of BART and 77% of ferry riders. Safety perceptions differ: 13% of BART riders feel "very safe" versus 27% of AC Transit riders. About half use transit for work, down from 60% pre-pandemic. MTC paused regional surveys during the pandemic and expects the long-form Transit Passenger Survey to finish by decade's end.
