VIDEO: Mountain lion spotted in San Francisco's Pac Heights neighborhood
"A mountain lion was caught on video near San Francisco's Lafayette Park in the Pac Heights neighborhood Sunday night. Experts believe it is young, at about a year old, and got a bit lost. Mountain lions disperse around this age, seeking a habitat far away from their birth place. In this case, experts say the mountain lion will likely find its way south and out of San Francisco soon."
"One man walking his dogs says he'll be avoiding the park for now. "We love to see things like this like so much wildlife in the city. But a little bit concerned because you know little puppies. So we are not coming in until we know everything is safe," said Manuel Cases, San Francisco resident. San Francisco Animal Care and Control says if you see a mountain lion, do not go near it. Back away slowly, and do not run. And call them to report any sighting."
A mountain lion was filmed near Lafayette Park in the Pac Heights neighborhood late Sunday. The animal appears to be about one year old and likely wandered away during normal juvenile dispersal from its birth area. Young mountain lions commonly travel to find new habitat at this age and are expected to move south and out of San Francisco. A local resident said he will avoid the park until safety is confirmed because of concern for small dogs. San Francisco Animal Care and Control advises not to approach, to back away slowly, not to run, and to report sightings.
