'Streets for All' Talk with SFMTA Director Julie Kirschbaum - Streetsblog San Francisco
"Agencies are running on the fumes of relief funding."
"Hopefully, we will have two ballot measures in November of 2026."
"We can not meet any of our goals for vehicle miles traveled, safety,"
"all other ways of traveling around the city at risk."
San Francisco's municipal transit system faces large budget shortfalls caused by reduced post‑COVID ridership and the loss of state and federal funding. Potential cuts include eliminated night service, eliminated routes, and greatly reduced service levels. Transit advocates plan to collect roughly 200,000 signatures to place a half‑cent regional sales tax (S.B. 63) on the 2026 ballot and are preparing a parcel tax to cover an estimated $150 million annual Muni deficit even if S.B. 63 passes. Agencies are operating on dwindling relief funding. Without new revenue, targets for reducing vehicle miles traveled and improving safety cannot be met, and increased congestion would threaten other travel modes. Infrastructure spending will prioritize maintaining reliability before new projects.
