"Jeffrey Church, who heads Berkeley's tourism office, said the city's hotels are not shaping up to be quite as full as they will be during graduation weekend in May which is typically their most in-demand time of year but it's still shaping up to be a busy week. That would be a shot in the arm for a local hotel industry that has had a rocky recovery from the pandemic."
"We really positioned ourselves as the cost-effective destination for those who want to go to Super Bowl events and the Super Bowl itself, said Church, the CEO of Visit Berkeley. It's a proximity game. And Church said tourism officials plan to build on their strategies from Super Bowl Week later this year, when Levi's Stadium hosts several World Cup matches. We're really going to go all out in May and June, he said."
Berkeley will host a celebrity flag football game at Memorial Stadium as part of Super Bowl Week activities. Downtown San Francisco hosts official Super Bowl events including the Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl Experience at the Moscone Center, while Super Bowl Opening Night occurred in San Jose and the game will be at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Two large Berkeley hotels appear fully booked for Saturday night, and overall hotel occupancy is lower than graduation weekend but still busy. Visit Berkeley positions the city as a cost-effective, proximity-based option and plans to build on strategies for upcoming World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium.
