SFO warns of extra flight delays during its busiest season
"As it's done repeatedly over the past several years, the San Francisco International Airport is repairing runways for a smoother landing. After addressing one of its shortest runways in 2023 and then one of its longest in 2024, SFO continues its tarmac overhaul with a new project that's expected to last six months and partially disrupt its busy summer season."
"The construction is expected to cost $180 million, with half of the funding covered by the Federal Aviation Administration. Airport officials said that work will begin on March 30 and run until Oct. 2. During the construction period, all departures and arrivals will use the longer runways 28 Left and 28 Right. While the increased volumes on those runways will create dazzling footage for online aviation streamers, it translates to an increase in delays for travelers."
San Francisco International Airport will close Runway 1 Right from March 30 through Oct. 2 for repaving of the surface layer, taxiway improvements, lighting upgrades and striping repainting. The project is estimated at $180 million, with the Federal Aviation Administration covering half of the funding. All departures and arrivals will use runways 28 Left and 28 Right during construction, increasing traffic on those runways and raising the likelihood of delays. SFO expects fewer than 10% of flights to be delayed, averaging under 30 minutes and most likely during 9:00am and 8:00–9:00pm peak periods. Peninsula communities may hear increased departing aircraft noise. Runways 1 Right and 1 Left are among the airport's shortest and are located between Terminal 1 and San Francisco Bay near Highway 101.
