SFMOMA's "Free First Thursdays" Free Museum Day for Locals
"2026 UPDATE: Sadly, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has confirmed that its Free First Thursday program is temporarily paused beginning February 2026. The museum says the program will be re-envisioned and relaunched at a future date, with updates to be shared once plans are finalized. As of January 15, no additional Free First Thursday dates are scheduled."
"The change affects the long-running program that provided free general admission to Bay Area residents on the first Thursday of each month from 4 to 8 pm. Although the free admission program has been paused, SFMOMA will continue its late-night Thursday hours, with galleries open until 8 pm."
"On the first Thursday of every month, all residents of the nine Bay Area counties are invited to spend an evening at the museum on us! General admission is free from 4-8 pm. Surcharged exhibitions require separate paid tickets. Tickets are available approximately two weeks in advance. Reserving online is highly encouraged. Limit two adult tickets per reservation."
"Qualifying counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Enjoy a complimentary coffee when you attend First Thursdays! Buy one Illy coffee drink; get one free (of equal or lesser value, while supplies last) at Steps Coffee on Floor 2. To redeem your offer, use the voucher that you will receive along with your pre-visit email from SFMOMA or at the visitor desk when you get your tickets on-site at the museum."
