SF Tenderloin grant program offers small businesses opportunity to move into vacant spaces
"Billy is telling me his story. It is one of grit, determination and perseverance,"
"This program will revitalize the spirit of the neighborhood and also give people in the neighborhood an opportunity to come up and get another chance in life."
"The Tenderloin is downtown. This is the community that needs it most. It's immigrant families, working families that live in the Tenderloin,"
The Tenderloin Storefront Opportunity Grant provided $50,000 to five small businesses to cover rent, renovations, equipment, and business operations. Winners completed training, developed business plans, and signed three-year leases before receiving funding. Falafelland, opened by Billy Alabsi on Golden Gate Avenue, received a grant and aims to revitalize neighborhood spirit and create opportunities for local residents. The Office of Economic Workforce Development reported about a 25% storefront vacancy rate on Larkin Street in the Tenderloin. City leaders emphasized support for immigrant and working families and the goal of reoccupying vacant downtown storefronts.
