S.F. landlord may sell belongings of Tenderloin residents displaced in fire
"notice of disposal of personal property left in unit after fire"
"if the value exceeds $700, they may be sold at public auction."
"I'm just thinking, like, so you profit off of that?! Something about that just seems so callous and wrong."
"how to claim your property"
A Dec. 12 fire at 50 Golden Gate Ave. displaced dozens of residents and emptied over 60 apartments in a six-story building. Landlord Mosser Companies sent a notice stating unclaimed items under $700 may be tossed and items valued over $700 may be sold at public auction. The notice included a contact number missing a digit. Many residents who returned found valuables missing, and at least five residents reported not receiving December rent refunds. Mosser paid hotel stays only through Jan. 9 and then offered smaller apartment leases or required residents to find other housing. Residents from 36 units issued a list of demands.
