Nearly 100 community members gathered to honor Chris Brignetti, a cyclist killed in a collision on Freitas Parkway. The Marin County Bicycle Coalition organized a rally emphasizing the need for safety reforms at the dangerous intersection. Leaders highlighted a history of preventable accidents and called for simple safety fixes like lane narrowing and improved visibility. Participants stressed the importance of collective action to ensure safer streets, holding local officials accountable for necessary changes to avoid further tragedies.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Chris's family and community. Our goal today is not to point fingers, but rather to demand that the city fix two things: fix this deadly intersection and fix the process by which our streets are made safer.
Five preventable collisions have occurred at the Freitas Parkway and Lea Drive intersection in recent years, all under similar circumstances: a driver turning left into the path of a bicyclist.
The fixes are simple: narrow the lanes, extend the median, and trim back vegetation to improve visibility. These changes could have made Chris's crash far less likely.
We have to come together and hold decision-makers accountable. We can't accept streets that feel unsafe.
