About 130,000 homes and businesses in northern San Francisco experienced a widespread outage beginning Saturday afternoon after a fire at the 8th and Mission substation and related grid issues. PG&E restored power to the bulk of affected customers by Sunday, leaving about 17,000 still without electricity and promising full restoration by 2 p.m. Monday. Crews and additional engineers and electricians were mobilized to repair extensive substation damage. The utility described the repairs and restoration as complex and safety-focused. The outage caused widespread business closures, darkened street and holiday lights, and significant transit disruptions.
