San Francisco takes former Oakland Ballers pitcher Kelsie Whitmore as No. 1 overall pick in WPBL draft
"If you asked a six-year-old version of me (about) this opportunity and that it's happening right now, she would one, probably not believe you, but two, just be so so so so excited for it, Whitmore said on the live stream of the draft. I'm just grateful for the opportunity. And I'm excited to be representing the city of San Francisco. And where it all began for me. The first professional team I ever played for was in the Bay Area, for the Sonoma Stompers."
"I'm just grateful for the opportunity. And I'm excited to be representing the city of San Francisco. And where it all began for me. The first professional team I ever played for was in the Bay Area, for the Sonoma Stompers. I'm really excited to be able to go back there and kind of just represent the city of San Francisco. And y'all be ready because we're going to win a championship for you guys."
Kelsie Whitmore was selected first overall by the San Francisco franchise in the Women's Pro Baseball League inaugural draft, and Arwen McCullough was also drafted by the hometown team. The four-team WPBL will include Los Angeles, Boston and New York and will be based in Springfield, Illinois this summer. Whitmore has deep Bay Area ties and a record of breaking gender barriers: she and Stacy Piagno played for the Sonoma Stompers in 2016 as the first female teammates in a men's league since the 1950s; she later became the first woman to start a game as a pitcher in the independent Pioneer League and played last season for the Savannah Bananas. Whitmore expressed gratitude, pride in representing San Francisco, and pledged to pursue a championship for the city.
