Marco Martinez, 28, was struck five times during a 2021 shooting that killed his friend Isaiah Cardenas. Martinez was carrying a loaded, unregistered pistol that day, and a prior robbery conviction made his possession illegal; he was charged as a felon in possession. Senior U.S. District Judge Edward Chen sentenced Martinez to one year in federal prison to run concurrently with a five-year carjacking term; Martinez also has a 2024 first-degree burglary conviction. Martinez admitted to having a gun during a 2022 raid. Prosecutors described him as a gang member with prior violent conduct. Martinez acknowledged responsibility and said owning a gun made the community less safe.
