Bay to Breakers, the 113th annual foot race across San Francisco, drew around 30,000 participants on a sunny but windy Sunday, up from about 20,000 the previous year. Part of the city was shut down in the morning, and the event proceeded with few problems, with no notable reports of accidents or disruptive behavior. Cool, breezy conditions provided favorable running weather for some, while many participants drank along the route as part of tradition. The field included naked chefs, pigeons, a “centipede” of cowboys, junked Spirit Airlines planes, nudists, and groups in tall paper Western hats referencing Doug Dimmadome. Spectators and themed displays appeared along the course, including balcony Muppets and shoutouts to Chonkers. Racers ranged from children to older adults, including 82-year-old Harry York, who walked with his daughter and placed 17th in his age group.
"Racers of all ages took part, as usual, and the Chronicle caught up with 82-year-old Harry York, who used to live in the city but now lives in Walnut Creek, who walked the race with his daughter and came in 17th in his age group. "I love San Francisco. It's just fun to be here and see it all again," York told the paper. Some people, of course, actually run this race and try to make good time."
