NTSB identifies several Bay Area bridges in need of evaluation for vulnerabilities
Briefly

The NTSB has called for operators of numerous bridges, including those in the Bay Area, to evaluate their structural resilience to ship collisions. This urgency follows the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland, attributed to a lack of risk assessments. Many identified bridges predate established safety guidelines from 1991, suggesting a significant risk. The Bay Area's assessment identifies all but the Bay Bridge and Dumbarton Bridge as potentially perilous, emphasizing the need for immediate action due to increasing ship sizes and associated hazards.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy emphasized, "The remaining 68 bridges that have not undergone a vulnerability assessment based on recent vessel traffic have an unknown level of risk of collapse from a vessel collision. Which is why we're recommending that those 30 bridge owners take action now."
John Goodwin stated, "There is a nonzero chance that some disaster like what happened in Baltimore last year could happen at other locations around the Bay Area. We're doing a risk assessment of all the Bay Area bridges right now because there are new factors to consider."
