The research vessel Kaisei, moored in the Oakland Estuary for eight years, sank unexpectedly. Investigators are probing the causes and potential environmental impact. The U.S. Coast Guard reported a minor sheen on the water, likely from motor oil rather than leaking fuel, but diver assessments revealed that two checked fuel tanks were empty. Concerns remain as three other fuel tanks, possibly containing diesel, have not yet been inspected. Booms have been deployed around the submerged vessel for containment and protection.
As for the current concerns, there was a slight visible sheen after the vessel sunk, suspected to be from a container of motor oil that was on board.
Petty Officer Chis Sappey stated that two of the accessible fuel tanks have been checked by salvage divers and found to be empty.
