She previously served as managing editor of Salon and The Bay Citizen, which produced the Bay Area pages of The New York Times. Her book, A Greek Tragedy: One Day, A Deadly Shipwreck, and the Human Cost of the Refugee Crisis, was published by Simon & Schuster/One Signal Publishers in March 2025."

Miner currently serves on the board of the Presidio Trust, is vice-chair of the California Arts Council, and is a member of the Arion Press board. She holds a bachelor's degree in history from Brown University, a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University, and a master's degree in English literature from Mills College."
Mission Local added Jeanne Carstensen, Nicola Miner, and Nate Olivares-Giles to its board of directors. The new board members contribute decades of experience in journalism, nonprofit leadership, public service, technology, and storytelling. Carstensen brings national reporting experience, prior managing-editing roles, international work, and a recently published book on the refugee crisis. Miner co-founded a family foundation focused on social justice, has taught college writing, serves on public boards, and holds multiple advanced degrees. Olivares-Giles is a writer and editor with experience across journalism, technology, and digital media and spent seven years at Apple as an app writer. The appointments aim to strengthen governance as Mission Local expands across San Francisco neighborhoods.
