Mayor Lurie proposes to raise certain taxes to fund SFMTA's $322M budget deficit
"We believe that a parcel tax is the best mechanism to generate the level of funding needed to support Muni service and that it can be structured in a way that is fair and affordable."
"If Caltrain fails, if our system fails, gridlock on the highways like you can't believe," he said."
"The numbers are with us. The data is with us. We got to keep going and give voters the chance," Canepa said."
"There's going to be a lot of information thrown at voters, and for some folks that's going to be really overwhelming," she said."
Mayor Daniel Lurie proposed a parcel tax to generate funding for Muni and help close the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's $322 million deficit. The parcel tax is presented as a mechanism that can be structured to be fair and affordable. A regional sales tax increase is also under consideration and would be decided by voters across the Peninsula, South Bay, East Bay, and the city. Some San Mateo County officials object to the regional measure over perceived unequal burden. David Canepa warned that Caltrain failure would cause severe highway gridlock and urged voters be given the chance to decide. Political scientist Melissa Michelson cautioned that simultaneous measures could overwhelm some voters on the November 2026 ballot.
