After a positive exit interview, Marc-Edouard Vlasic was surprised when the Sharks announced they were buying out the final year of his contract. Having spent his entire career with the Sharks since being drafted in 2005, Vlasic expressed disappointment in the communication from the team regarding the buyout. The Sharks' general manager Mike Grier stated the decision aimed to create roster space to improve the defense, following their signing of new players after the buyout.
I had a good end-of-season interview... They told me that I played well, especially defensively, and that they liked that I was a mentor to the young guys.
It would have been honest of them to tell me right after the season, 'By the way, we may (buy out your contract), so prepare your house.' Instead, they did it on June 30.
Sharks general manager Mike Grier said it was a tough decision but that the team wanted to create a roster opening in a bid to upgrade their maligned defense corps.
Since buying out Vlasic, the Sharks signed Dmitry Orlov and John Klingberg in free agency and claimed Nick Leddy off waivers.
