Holi at 1,070 feet: Salesforce Tower lights up for Indian festival of colors
"There's so much talent, culture and beauty to South Asian themes. We just need advocates to put it out there. It would be something different from hosting private, siloed events only for the South Asian community. It would include the whole city."
"After Mayor Daniel Lurie proclaimed Oct. 20 as 'Diwali day' last fall, followers of Sri's Instagram reached out expecting more representation, especially around festivals like Holi and Diwali, the festival of lights. Sri, the co-founder of the arts group IDEATE SF, who has for close to two decades lived in the area where Salesforce Tower came up, had an idea: put the centuries-old holiday on the tallest building west of the Mississippi."
Seema Sri, co-founder of arts group IDEATE SF, spearheaded efforts to bring South Asian festival representation to San Francisco's Salesforce Tower. Following Mayor Daniel Lurie's Diwali Day proclamation, Sri's Instagram followers requested broader festival visibility. Partnering with Kudrat D. Kontilis from the San Francisco Immigrant Rights Commission, Sri envisioned celebrating Holi on the city's tallest building west of the Mississippi. The collaboration connected with Andrew Robinson of the East Cut Community Benefit District, who facilitated contact with Jim Campbell Studios, responsible for the tower's LED crown installations. Campbell was originally commissioned in 2017 by Boston Properties under the city's one percent for art program. The Holi installation represents a shift from private, community-exclusive events toward citywide cultural celebration.
