"MORE: Could this be the last Macy's holiday tree lighting in SF's Union Square? We talked to TMG Partners about what they plan to do. "With a clean sheet of paper, we are going to look what we can do with the building. How can we make it part of the community other than one giant 600-thousand square foot department store," said Michael Covarrubias, Chairman of TMG Partners."
"The store has been a staple of the shopping district for than 80 years and had been slated for potential closure. There are so many reasons people love to come to Union Square around the holidays. Some of it has to do with Macy's. "It's a great anchor of the store," said Jeanine Elstor, a Bay Area resident. "I especially admire the puppies in the window.""
TMG Partners reached an agreement with Macy's to develop the landmark Union Square flagship complex. The firm has extensive experience with development deals and historic rehabs. Plans are in early stages and may convert the single 600,000-square-foot department store into a mix of uses, potentially including housing, retail, experiential office space, and other community-focused functions. Macy's had previously announced plans to close the flagship. Local residents value Macy's presence, especially seasonal attractions like window displays and holiday events. TMG Partners describes the project as their most exciting opportunity and intends to reimagine the building with a 'clean sheet of paper.'
